God does not call “The Professionals”

Lessons from Jeremiah 1:4-9

”Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child.

But the LORD said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak. Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the LORD. Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the LORD said unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy mouth.”

How does Jeremiah stack up against the so-called, self-proclaimed “professional” church clergy of today? Not very well at all.

Did Jeremiah,

  • Attend a worldly seminary to learn God’s Word? No.
  • Enjoy fame and fortune? No.
  • Have the respect of the religious and civil leaders? No.
  • Live a comfortable easy life? No.
  • Experience a direct calling from God? YES!

These few verses are literally overflowing with God’s mercy, grace, and provision for His people. Let’s take a look at them shall we?

  • I formed thee in the belly”, forever confirms it is God, and Him alone which creates life. Yes, there is a physical contribution between mother and father to pass along their combined genetic material, which obviously would be impossible if God had not created the biological system in the first place! Without God’s direct, personal, intimate, every present, ongoing involvement, life would simply not exist. Sorry to all the evolutionists out there, you have been deceived by one of the greatest lies of all time. Indeed, God knew Jeremiah intimately and personally, having formed him by hand within the womb of his mother.
  • I cannot speak for I am a child”, is the natural response from many of us, preferring to let someone else do the work God has called them to. These few words end the argument once and for all that God cannot use children to fulfill His purpose, or that a child is incapable of understanding God’s word. Rubbish. This line of thinking is utter nonsense and runs contrary to Scripture. “Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.” (Matthew 10:15). Looking ahead a little further we read, “Say not, I am a child.” Despite Jeremiah’s youth and apprehension, God was determined to have him in His ministry, and formed him in the womb for this reason. Jeremiah belonged to the Lord and that was that!
  • Be not afraid” confirms the certainty of God’s protection. Believer and follower of Jesus, why should you be afraid of the world when God has promised to never leave or forsake you? “And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.” (Deuteronomy 31:8). And also, “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.” (Matthew 10:28-31)
  • I have put my words in thy mouth” highlights how intimately God is involved with each of His people. The words God would give to Jeremiah were His words, His thoughts, and His decrees. Of course, God could have just as easily spoken directly to whomsoever He wished; however, this is not the usual way He does things. By far the most common ways the Lord communicates with us is through the reading and hearing of Scripture, and His Spirit speaking through others to us. We may not have been called by God in the same manner Jeremiah was, yet we are called through the Holy Spirit nonetheless. In these last days, exciting and terrifying as they are, and why there is still time; go forth into a lost, wicked, and terrified world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

The Lord Jesus Christ is alive now and forever more!
